I once heard an author say that writing was a solitary exercise. I find it to not be the case. Characters in stories become as real (perhaps even more real) than people in my life. I look forward to seeing them on the page and what they will reveal to me of their makeup as they evolve. Pretty exciting stuff!

Following is a snippet of Scarecrow’s Memories, Armando’s latest work, his second novel scheduled for release in late 2024 and is not yet available.

“It’s my first day. I transferred here from Albuquerque,” she answered.

“Well, welcome to La Cruz High School, Dorothy,”  Roberto said.

“Dorothy?”

“You landed here from nowhere where there’re poor munchkin students, witch teachers, and a clueless wizard for a principal.”

 “You’re funny.”

“Funny? I just call it like I see it, Dorothy.”

“It’s Elizabeth, but most people call me Beth.”

“So, Beth, are you a good witch or a bad witch?”

“I can be both. How about you? Are you the cowardly lion?”

“Worse. I’m the brainless scarecrow, but you can call me Roberto.”

And so begins a relationship that to survive, would have to weather fearsome storms: racism, Christian families, one fundamentalist Protestant, then other fundamentalist Catholic, brutal wars in the Mideast, and the worst psychological/emotional affliction, PTSD.

The novel takes place in norther New Mexico and fluctuates from the 1600s to modern times.

  • “A writer’s heart displayed is a beautiful thing, especially when the view includes honesty, courage, and wisdom. In his new book, Profile, Armando García-Dávila shows us the passion- ate, loving, laughing, angry, proud, and wise heart that beats in his chest.”
